National Fraternity and Sorority Day?

(Photo Courtesy of Greek Life at SUNY New Paltz.)
There is a national day for almost everything. There’s a National Cupcake Day, National Margarita Day, National Puppy Day, and a National Siblings Day, etc. As a huge proponent of fraternity and sorority life, I was surprised to find out there is no National Fraternity and Sorority Day. The idea for the Google search of the term came to mind when I was walking through Times Square and noticed a few people wearing Greek letters. I thought wouldn’t it be interesting to really know how many members of fraternities and sororities were in this crowded area at this particular moment, or in Grand Central Station or anywhere on the NYC subway?

The closest thing to a National Fraternity and Sorority Day I could find online was the National Panhellenic Conference’s (NPC) International Badge Day, which was started in 1997 and is held in the month of March to commemorate Women’s History Month.

I think it would be incredible to have a National Fraternity and Sorority Day where all members of Greek letter organizations, both active undergraduates and alumni all over, can display their letters on a shirt, hat, bag, briefcase or tie to show our strength in numbers. Imagine a day when fraternity and sorority members of all ages in malls, small to midsize towns and metropolitan areas could proudly display their Greek life membership for a day in unison?

Such a day could be held on all colleges/universities in the nation around the beginning of September to assist with rush activities. It would help increase organizational membership across the nation and help highlight the benevolent work of fraternities and sororities.

It would be great if the NPC, the North-American Interfraternity Conference, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations, the National APIA Panhellenic Association, the National Multicultural Greek Council, along with all local and regional fraternities and sororities, can agree on an annual date of recognition and celebration.

So I’ll put it out there. How about the second Monday in September? Maybe a specific date like September 7th or the 15th? Imagine if such a day catches on and becomes like the St. Patrick’s Day of Greek Life? Imagine a day where likeminded individuals come together to express pride in a part of our lives that means so much to so many people?

If you like the idea, feel free to share this blog post. If you would like to propose a date for a National Fraternity and Sorority Day, be sure to leave your suggestion in the comment box below.

In the meantime, keep representing your organizations for the wonderful work they do and the lifelong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood they provide.
