Consent is So Frat - Bringing The Conversation of Consent to the Forefront of the Greek Community

National news headlines have highlighted the issue of fraternities and sexual assault. It is unfortunate such devious and dishonorable acts still occur on American college campuses. However, a nonprofit organization led by a fraternity member hopes to help change college culture for the better by bringing the conversation of consent to the forefront of fraternity and sorority life.

Consent is So Frat aims to create a movement of fraternities who wish to be allies in combating sexual violence and rape culture on their campuses. The nonprofit was founded by Matthew Leibowitz, a 2014 graduate of Wesleyan University and a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity.

Consent is So Frat runs an awareness campaign through photo campaigns, campus events, and conversation-starting products and provides a curriculum on consent and sexual assault prevention to fraternities and Greek Life communities. The organization has also launched a Campus Representative Program.

Making consent and healthy relationships part of what it means to be a fraternity brother or sorority sister is the goal of Consent is So Frat.

“The idea for Consent is So Frat is to make talking about and promoting consent part of being in a fraternity,” Matthew Leibowitz told USA Today. Consent is So Frat is just the beginning of the conversation.

“It brings the fraternities on a campus together in recognizing their need to promote consent in their organizations and greater communities, but it also introduces to the campus the idea of fraternities being allies in ending sexual assault,” said Leibowitz.
